Word Ladder
About Word Ladder
Word Ladder's real difficulty isn't finding any word that's one letter off — it's finding one that's also a legal step toward the word you're aiming for, which is why players who change letters at random tend to paint themselves into a corner a few moves in. Each puzzle gives you a starting word and a target word, and every move swaps exactly one letter to produce another real word, no rearranging or adding letters allowed. Because the game accepts a move as soon as it forms any valid word, it's entirely possible to make three correct moves in a row and still end up stuck, which is what turns this into a planning puzzle rather than a vocabulary quiz.
How to Play
- Look at your starting word and the target word you need to reach.
- Change exactly one letter at a time to form a new, valid word.
- Check that each new word you make is real — invalid words won't count as a step.
- Plan a few moves ahead so you don't paint yourself into a dead end before reaching the target.
Word Ladder FAQ
Why did I get stuck even though every word I made along the way was valid?
Word Ladder only checks that each step is a real word, not that it is actually moving you toward the target — so it is possible to make several correct one-letter swaps in a row and still land somewhere with no valid next step. The puzzle is really about planning which letter to change first, not just finding any word that fits.
Can I add or remove a letter to solve a ladder faster?
No — every move has to keep the same word length and change exactly one letter into a different one. That single-letter-swap rule is the entire constraint the puzzle runs on, so words that would otherwise work if you could drop or insert a letter are not valid moves here.
