About Ninjas Return
Four keys, two of them for fighting: the arrows move and jump, A swings the sword, and S throws a chain at anything too far away to reach. That second attack is the one players forget exists, and it is usually the answer when an enemy is standing just outside blade range on a narrow ledge. Stages are short side-scrolling stretches of forest with shuriken arriving from off-screen, so pausing to line up a swing is riskier than it feels. None of the controls are explained in-game, which makes the first clear stretch the place to test them.

When is the chain the right attack instead of the sword?
Whenever closing distance would cost you — enemies holding a ledge, archers throwing from range, or anything standing where a missed sword swing leaves you exposed. The chain hits from outside their reach, so the sword is really for enemies that have already committed to walking into you.
What keeps hitting me when nothing is on screen?
Shuriken travel in from off-screen ahead of the enemy who threw them, so damage can land before its source is visible. Moving in short bursts with pauses, rather than holding the arrow key down, gives you the beat you need to spot incoming projectiles at the screen edge.
