You are looking for the two cards that combine to make the number in front of you, which means the board reads differently depending on which card you are currently holding. That one rule change makes it noticeably harder than a standard pairs game and stops you from working on autopilot. Boards are short and the arithmetic stays small, so it is thinking rather than calculating.
