Send troops early and you can take ground cheaply; hold back and you can answer whatever the enemy commits to, but you give up the initiative doing it. Each unit type beats something and loses to something else, which turns a push into a guessing match about what is coming next. Matches run short enough that a bad opening read only costs you a few minutes.
