About Backroom Exit

Yellow wallpaper, humming lights, and a door that will not open without the right item — this is a first-person escape room built in Unity rather than a point-and-click. You walk with WASD, look around with the mouse, and pick things up by left-clicking them, then scroll the wheel to switch between whatever is in your inventory. The difficulty is spatial: corridors repeat, and losing track of which room you already searched costs more time than any single puzzle does. It also runs heavier than most things on this site, so give it a moment before assuming it has broken.

Backroom Exit FAQ

I picked up a key but the door still will not open — what am I missing?

Carrying an item and holding it are different things here. You need to scroll the mouse wheel until the key is the equipped item in your hand, then left-click the door. Doors also pair with specific keys, so the one you found may belong to a different room entirely.

How do I stop getting lost when every corridor looks identical?

Pick one wall and follow it, and use the furniture as landmarks — the rooms repeat their wallpaper but not their contents. Doubling back the moment you feel unsure wastes less time than pressing on, because walking deeper into unsearched corridors compounds the disorientation.

How do you play Backroom Exit?

Move with WASD or the arrow keys and rotate the view with the mouse. Left-click to interact — opening doors, picking up keys and searching furniture. Scroll the mouse wheel to swap between the items you are carrying. On a touchscreen, use the on-screen joypad to walk and the hand button to interact.

Is Backroom Exit free to play?

Yes. Backroom Exit is free to play in your browser on BreakArcade. There is no purchase, no subscription and no account required - open the page and press Play.

Do I need to download Backroom Exit?

No. Backroom Exit is an HTML5 game that runs inside your browser tab. Nothing is installed on your device, and closing the tab ends the session.

Can I play Backroom Exit on a school Chromebook?

Backroom Exit runs on any device with a modern browser, including low-powered school Chromebooks, because it loads in the browser rather than installing. Whether it opens depends on your network - some schools block the game host, which is outside our control.
