Throwing the hammer with Q sends it out, and pressing Q again pulls it back, which turns your main weapon into something you can be separated from. Between throws you have F for hand-to-hand and G for a hammer smash, so being caught without the hammer is inconvenient rather than fatal. Shift raises your movement speed, and given how much ground the fights cover, it stays held most of the time. Deciding when to throw and when to hold onto the hammer is more interesting than the presentation suggests.
