Highway Rush keeps its control scheme to two directions — left arrow or A to swing left, right arrow or D to swing right — which matters because the portrait-oriented road only shows two or three lanes ahead before traffic appears. Mouse and touch work too, sliding the car over instead of snapping it lane by lane, and the two input styles feel genuinely different: keys jump you a full lane instantly, while dragging lets you thread a narrower gap between two trucks if you're precise about it. Speed climbs the longer a run lasts, which is standard for the genre, but the narrow vertical view here means hazards often appear only one or two car-lengths before you'd need to react. That compresses the reaction window noticeably more than a widescreen version of the same idea would.

Is dragging with the mouse actually better than using the arrow keys, or just a different control scheme?
They handle differently rather than one being strictly better: the arrow keys snap the car a full lane at a time, which is faster for a clean dodge but useless for threading a narrow gap, while dragging moves the car smoothly and lets you nudge into a partial gap between two trucks that a keyboard lane-snap would just slam into.
Why do hazards seem to appear so late compared to other driving games?
The road is shown in a tall, narrow view rather than a wide one, so there's less vertical space between where a truck first appears and where your car actually is. That's a deliberate tradeoff of the portrait layout, not a bug, and it means reacting on sight works better here than planning several car-lengths ahead.
