Another player's trail is often thin enough to be easy to miss at a glance, especially near the edge of the screen. Crossing any part of a rival's body ends your run instantly, even the thin tail-end section that looks like it has already faded away.

The edges are safer early because fewer snails cross there, but the center holds far more food, so growth slows if you avoid it entirely. Cutting through the crowded middle in short bursts, then retreating to the edge, tends to grow a snail faster than sitting still on the border.
