Two dimensions, one hole, and an arc drawn in dots before the ball leaves the tee. Early courses put the flag out in the open, which leaves room to learn what a given pull produces; later ones stand hills between the tee and the pin, and from there the height of the arc starts to matter as much as its length. The presentation is minimal to the point of being a diagram, which suits a game with exactly one judgement in it. Nothing is timed, and a hole can be replayed until the arc comes out right.

- Release to swing.
- Adjust the height of the arc, not just the aim, after a miss.

Why does the ball keep running past the hole?
A flat arc arrives with speed still in it. Lifting the shot higher trades distance for a softer landing, and that is the adjustment that starts to matter once the hole stops sitting on open ground.
