Because the play space has depth instead of just width and height, judging distance matters as much as judging angle — a shot that looks lined up from one viewing distance can drift past a cluster it would have hit on a flat board. Clearing bubbles near the front opens sightlines to color clusters stacked further back, which is usually a better use of a shot than firing blind into the deepest part of the field.
