Aquava keeps the mechanic as plain as the genre gets: click a fish, watch the score go up, click the next one before it swims out of range. There's no separate currency screen or upgrade tree layered on top — the score is the entire game, which makes it more of a short focus-and-reflex exercise than a progression system to grind. Fish move at different speeds and some dart away right as the cursor gets close, so a strategy built around methodically clicking left to right falls behind fast; the higher-scoring runs come from tracking whichever fish is about to leave the visible area rather than the nearest one.

Aquava FAQ
Why does clicking the closest fish first usually lead to a lower score than expected?
Fish that are already near the edge of the screen disappear on their own regardless of position, so time spent clicking a slow fish sitting comfortably in the middle is time a faster, about-to-exit fish spends escaping uncaught — chasing exits first protects more points than clicking in order of proximity.
